If you are headed to Florida for business or pleasure, the good news is that the Sunshine State has some extremely affordable rental car rates because there are so many companies competing for your business. Whether you are looking for a Fort Lauderdale Car Rental or a Fort Myers Car Rental, you can find a great rate if you know a few insider tips.

Keep checking the rental car rates

Prices for Florida rental cars can change from day to day, and even from hour to hour. So once you find a good rental car deal, make sure you check back at least once or twice before your trip to see if the rate has changed. If it’s lower, go ahead and change or cancel and re-book your reservation at the lower rate.

Bigger is not always better

Many people forget to consider gas expenses in the price of a Florida rental car, but the cost can add up, especially if you are renting for more than a few days or plan to drive long distances. Sometimes when you pick up your rental car, you will be offered a “free” upgrade to an SUV or larger size car. If you really need the extra space, then go ahead and take the upgrade, but don’t take it unless you really need it. You are likely to get reduced gas mileage with a larger vehicle, not to mention it will more difficult to park.

Skip the GPS unless you need it

One of the many add-ons that rental car companies will be happy to charge you for is a GPS system. While there are some situations when it certainly makes sense to get one, be sure think twice before you agree to pay about $10 a day for one. If you don’t have your own GPS system to bring, maybe a friend has one you can borrow for your trip, or your phone might have a GPS feature you could use. Either of those options will save you money.

These tips will help you save money on a rent-a-car from Jacksonville to West Palm Beach and anywhere else in between.
