When you think “cruise”, the Red Sea may not be the first thing that pops into your head. But this small stretch of ocean is known around the world for its crystal clear water, unspoiled beaches, and vast array of marine life.

This combined with the chance to experience some of the most interesting and beautiful archeological treasures of the world make Red Sea cruisesa great choice for a cruise holiday. What better way to get away from the cold and dreary winter weather than to soak up the warm winter sun in the Red Sea plus take in some of the world’s most fascinating historical sites.

The Red Sea at the north forms the Sinai Peninsula and extends 1000 miles south to hook up with the Indian Ocean near Yemen.

This little bit of paradise offers things like the resort towns of El Gouna and Eliat and great scuba diving at Dahab and Sharm el Sheikh. The Sudan is known for its many reefs that are perfect for snorkeling.

When not enjoying the beaches and the ocean you can visit the monuments of the Nile Valley like the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx and the amazing ancient city of Petra in Jordan, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Petra was reference in the Dead Sea Scrolls and discovered again in 1812.

The cruise lines that offer Red Sea cruises are Costa Cruises, Voyages of Discovery, Regent Seven Seas and Thomson Cruises. You can fly into places like Cairo and begin your cruise from there or book a longer cruise that begins in the UK. Some of the cruises are even cruise and stay cruises that include overnight stays along the way and at the end of your cruise and include more excursions at these spots.

An example itinerary for Red Sea cruises might begin in Cairo and end in Amman, Jordan. Ports of call and excursions along the way may include:

· A full one-day excursion from Ein El Sokhna in Egypt to the Monasteries of Anthony and St. Paul. They are located in the Arab Desert between the Nile and the Red Sea. They are two of the oldest monasteries in Egypt.

· After a day of cruising, a port call at Safaga allows for time to visit Luxor and the Karnak Temples and the famous Luxor Temple. This excursion usually includes a night’s stay in Luxor before returning to your ship.

· In Sharm El Sheikh there are more visits to ancient and fascinating monasteries on the itinerary on one day and then a day of swimming and snorkeling the next.

· The cruise disembarks in Aqaba, Jordan with a three-day stay to enjoy jeep excursions; a trip to see a Bedouin village; and a long excursion to Petra to explore the ancient city and its Roman structures like the Theater, Tombs, and the Courthouse.

The River Nile is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic natural waterways on Earth. The amazing civilisation of Ancient Egypt would never have developed if it were not for the Nile bringing life and sustenance into the area. This fact is reflected even today, the most populous parts of Egypt are along the Nile valley north of Aswan. Of course, millions of tourists visit Egypt in order to visit the pyramids, the temple of Luxor, and countless other amazing sites, but instead of travelling over land, perhaps the most appropriate means of immersing yourselves into the unique history of the region are river Nile cruises.

Many companies provide River Nile cruises but it is imperative that great care is taken before you reach a decision over which cruise to book. Firstly, consider which Nile cruise deals allow you to stop at sites which most interest you: whether you want to walk amongst the pyramids at Giza, discover the temples at Thebes, Karnak or Luxor, it is wise to ensure that you pick the cruise which is best tailored to your area of interest.

Secondly, make sure that the company which you book wit h is reputable and that all of its vessels meet the required safety standards.

Thirdly, shop around and consider the benefits of different Nile cruise deals. For example, some cruises will offer expert commentaries and advice on the history of the region and the most fascinating sites to visit; other cruises may include entertainment and delicious meals, and consider which deal best meets your personal tastes and budget. Ancient Egypt is a fascinating culture which has intrigued experts and laymen alike for centuries and its existence is due to its lifeblood: the Nile. There is no better way of discovering the mysteries of this beautiful and inspiring part of the world than embarking on a Nile cruise.

If you have an adventurous spirit and the ability to “go with the flow” and not worry about sticking to hard and fast schedules, cruise travel during hurricane season may be perfect for you.

Top it off with some of the best rates for cruises to be found each year, and you may discover that cruises during hurricane season have a lot of benefit.

Why choose a cruise during hurricane season? Mid July into early October is peak Caribbean hurricane season. Cruise rates are generally lower during these months anyway because the children are back and school. Add to that the fact that some people are hesitant to travel during this period and you can find some great deals. The chances of your cruise actually being affected by a hurricane are pretty small.

The exception may be cruises to Bermuda. Even a big tropical storm can convince a ship’s captain to divert to Canada.

As far as cruise travelin the Caribbean, the Mexican Riviera, and New England is concerned, the possibility of last minute changes to the itinerary does exist. The schedules can be affected by storms, whether they are expected or not. But the chances of being caught in the midst of a big storm are virtually non-existent. Hurricanes are typically slow moving and if a ship’s captain feels that the voyage will be threatened by a storm on a Caribbean itinerary for instance, a quick change of course will be made to another area.

Cruise ships have modern weather tracking equipment and one particular cruise ship captain once said that any captain who gets trapped in the midst of a hurricane “would have to be pretty stupid.” Because the strategy of cruise lines is always to avoid a storm rather than confront it, you’ll never have the need to know just how safe these big ships are or be faced with the possibility of becoming seasick.

Here are some key tips for planning cruise travel during hurricane season:

1. Look for the best deals since discounts are everywhere this time of year, especially during the peak of the hurricane season.

2. Even though great deals are available, it’s not a good idea to have a crucial port on your itinerary. Don’t plan a wedding or family reunion in a particular port on a certain day since itineraries can be changed at a moments notice because of the possibility of a storm.

3. Know that you need to be flexible. Even if your cruise is not affected by a storm, your flight to departure ports can be.

4. It’s always a good idea to buy trip insurance when planning a cruise during hurricane season. This type of insurance covers not only the typical things like medical expenses, it also covers cancelled cruises (which are very rare), travel delays, and traveller assistance.
